CAMO SMS – Safety Management Systems considerations

In prior posts we have looked at risk identification, management and mitigations – we will next consider SMS and how we might interact.

Think about the three words that make up SMS:

Safety – We can view this as the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury.

Management – We use the word commonly, but we can lose the intent of its meaning;  we will consider management to mean the process of dealing with or controlling things or people.

System – For our consideration, we will define ‘system’ to mean a set of principles or procedures according to which something is done, an organized scheme or method.

Safety Management Systems in summary is “A set of principles or procedures forming an organized scheme or method enabling a process of dealing with or controlling things or people to ensure they are protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury.”

We live and work in a world where we balance productivity against protection; there is a fine balance between maintaining productivity and revenue, while also maintaining protection and controlling costs.

A good SMS system will allow us to maintain the balance by appraisal and understanding of the risks in our environment and their real impact. The SMS will allow you to see different trends appearing, events occurring or areas of risk within your organisation.

This understanding and awareness allow effective beneficial management and financial decisions to be made that can maintain your operation in a safe zone operating between productivity (Revenue) and protection (Costs).

There are different SMS methodologies that are in use today and they vary widely; in a future post we will consider how one called Bowtie may be used to visualise data – what SMS do you use in your workplace, and do you think it is effective?
